President's Message - September 2009

I would first like to thank you for allowing me this opportunity to humbly serve as President of the Cascade Chapter. I will do my best to live up to your expectations in advancing the goal of the Chapter in maintaining the hightest level of professional ethics and mutual trust while treating all with dignity and respect in promoting safety, health, and environmental profession.

The profession we’ve chosen can be challenging, stressful, and rewarding at the same time. One way to handle this mix of emotions is to expend yourself to the sake of others and take pride in performing the work without a need for recognition. Remember, great organizations are member-driven. I encourage you to get involved and help continue the success of our chapter. If you have questions or suggestions, my door is always open.

Duane Grange
2009-2010 Cascade Chapter President

Cascade Chapter SPY Search

The Cascade Chapter is on a SPY search! The SPY—Safety Professional of the Year—will be awarded to a safety professional who has made significant contributions to the local safety and health community through outstanding technical work, contributions to an employer’s safety and health programs, and volunteerism and activities within the safety community and the local ASSE chapter.

Nomination packets were recently distributed to Cascade Chapter members and past conference attendees. You may nominate yourself or a safety professional who you believe has made an outstanding contribution to the community. Nominations are due by October 30th, and nominees need not be ASSE members.

PDC 2009: Safety at the Alamo

ASSE’s 2009 PDC saw a huge turn out, excellent speakers, classes, and night-time activities. For many attendees, the conference is combined with a family vacation. Several took advantage of Ranch ‘N Rodeo night and Texas Hold ‘Em Casino night. There was something for everyone!

The conference officially kicked off with a welcome from Society’s new President, Warren Brown, who spoke of his visions for the new year. Included in his presentation was the introduction of a new conference track focusing on business skills for safety professionals. Fox News Business and Financial Journalist Stuart Varney gave the keynote address. He spoke of the events that led the country to where it is now and what it will take to come out of it. Other speakers throughout the conference included Tim Sanders, former Yahoo Chief Solutions officer who discussed green business practices. Conference audiotapes are available for purchase through the Society website.

I recommend attending a national conference because of the networking opportunities with other safety professionals as well as acquiring cutting edge knowledge. See you in Baltimore!

Chapter VP Bartleson Awarded QEP Certification

The award comes after rigorous scrutiny of experience and qualifications, and satisfactory completion of an oral/written examination. The QEP Certification is the first and only multimedia, multi-disciplinary, board-certified credential of its kind that requires environmental professionals to consider the overall environmental picture, and to have the skills and knowledge to resolve real world problems.
