NEW BOOK ADDRESSES TOP CONSTRUCTION SAFETY ISSUES IN REDUCING ACCIDENTS, AMERICAN SOCIETY OF SAFETY ENGINEERS ANNOUNCE

DES PLAINES, IL (March 17, 2004) – Although the construction industry is witnessing a decrease in workplace injuries, construction sites continue to be a common place for accidents, such as falls, cave-ins, and scaffolding collapses. Providing best practices in construction safety to help reduce these types of workplace injuries, the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) today announced the availability of a new book titled ‘Construction Safety Management and Engineering.’

Designed as a tool and reference text for safety practitioners, project engineers, workers and students, ‘Construction Safety Management and Engineering’ consists of five sections covering pre-construction tasks, key components of the safety process, emerging issues in construction safety management, legal aspects and technical construction issues. Thirty-seven leading experts in construction safety and engineering, including members of the ASSE Construction Practice Specialty, developed the text.

“The book focuses on proven principles and practices intended to improve a company’s construction safety process, thus helping develop a safer workplace for all,” said ASSE Regional Vice President Darryl C. Hill, CSP, of Auburn Hills, MI, editor of the book. “It describes how successful and effective owners, contractors, and subcontractors operate in an increasingly challenging and fast-paced environment.”

The technical issues addressed in ‘Construction Safety Management and Engineering’ include crane safety, electrical hazards, fall protection compliance, steel erection guidelines, safety requirements for constructing electrical power-lines, safety and health considerations during demolition operations, industrial hygiene issues, and safety requirements during excavation, shoring and trenching. The book also examines language barriers and challenges dealing with cultural issues, construction safety at healthcare facilities, traffic control and work zone safety, professional safety and health certifications, safety and health issues for women in construction, and future trends in construction safety.

'Construction Safety Management and Engineering,' order number 4401, is $89.95 for ASSE members and students, and $99.95 for non-members. To order the book contact ASSE Customer Service at 847-699-2929 or visit ASSE’s website at www.asse.org.
