Leaders about Safety 2005
Looking for more information on ASSE's Safety 2005 conference? Be sure
to ask your chapter leaders about the information packet and PowerPoint presentation
they received while attending the Leadership Conference. The materials
highlight the many learning and networking opportunities available during the
annual Professional Development Conference (PDC), which is slated to run June
12-15, 2005, in
NAOSH Week: May 1-7,
2005
Each year, ASSE cosponsors North American
Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH) Week, aimed at increasing the focus of
employers, employees and the general public on preventing injury and illness in
the workplace. NAOSH Week 2005 is slated to run May 1-7,
and will focus on remembering workplace tragedies that have occurred, and
identifying, reviewing and communicating solutions aimed at preventing such
accidents from recurring.
As part its NAOSH Week
efforts, ASSE has launched its annual kids' “Safety-on-the-Job”
poster contest for ASSE members' children, grandchildren, nieces and
nephews. The contest runs through Feb. 14, 2005, and is designed to raise
awareness about the importance of workplace safety and preventing injuries.

Liberty Mutual Announce 2005 Safety Research Fellowship Program
The ASSE Foundation recently announced the 2005 Liberty Mutual Safety
Research Fellowship Program, which provides funding for two individuals to
conduct workplace safety research at the Liberty Mutual Research Institute for
Safety in Hopkinton, MA.
The program promotes safety research, expands current safety
practices and creates the groundwork for fellows to pursue safety research. The
recipients will spend four to six weeks at the Institute, where they will have
access to current research projects, equipment and research scientists.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens and either possess or be
working toward a master's degree or Ph.D. ASSE members and applicants enrolled
in or holding appointments at an Accreditation Board for Engineering and
Technology (ABET)-accredited safety program will receive special consideration.
Applications are due Mar. 1, 2005; the selected fellows will be announced by
Apr. 1, 2005.
Delmar E. Tally
Professional Development Grant
The Delmar E. Tally Professional
Development Grant provides financial assistance to ASSE members who wish to
advance their education through recognized SH&E certification courses,
professional development seminars or educational conferences. The filing
deadline is Dec. 1, 2004.
ASSE Awards &
Honors Factsheet
ASSE recognizes its members' contributions to the field of safety and their
volunteer service to the Society through its annual Awards and Honors program.
A new factsheet
describes ASSE's recognition programs and provides
information about deadlines, eligibility and criteria for the Fellow, Safety
Professional of the Year (SPY) and Outstanding Safety Educator awards. Submissions
for the Fellow and SPY awards must be postmarked by Dec. 1, 2004. Submissions
for the Safety Educator of the Year must be postmarked by Jan. 10, 2005.
CPEA Now Recognized for
Professional Member Status
ASSE members who hold the certified professional environmental auditor
(CPEA) designation are now eligible for professional member
status. The certification is administered by the Bureau of Environmental,
Health & Safety Auditor Certifications (BEAC) and is fully accredited by
the Council of Engineering and Scientific Specialty Boards, a third-party
accreditation board. The other designations currently recognized by ASSE when
awarding professional member status are P.E., CSP, CHMM, CIH, CHP, CRSP and RSP
(U.K.).

ASSE's Certificate in Safety Management
program consists of three required courses and various electives. To receive
the certificate, participants must earn a total of 7.5 CEUs,
and all courses must be completed within a five-year period. Earning ASSE's Certificate in Safety Management is an excellent way
