About the Cascade Chapter

Founded in 1911, the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) is the world's oldest and largest professional safety organization. ASSE's mission is to advance the technical, scientific, managerial and ethical knowledge, skills and competency of safety, occupational health and environmental professionals for the protection of people, property and the environment.

Its 32,000 members manage, supervise and consult on safety health and environmental issues in industry, insurance, government and education. Safety professionals help prevent accidents, injuries and occupational diseases, create safer work and leisure environments and develop safe products for all areas of human activity.

2009-2010 Chapter Officer Biographies

President - Duane Grange

Since joining the ASSE Cascade Chapter in 1995 Duane has served the chapter as Member At Large, Newsletter Editor, Governmental Affairs Liaison, and Vice President and welcomes the opportunity to serve the chapter once again as their Vice President.

Duane has been involved in safety since 1987, and has been the Safety Director for Selectemp Employment Services since 1995. Selectemp is a graduate of the Oregon OSHA Safety & Health Recognition Program (SHARP). He was co-founder and director of the Oregon Loggers Training Association, which received the Oregon Governor's Occupational Safety & Health Conference Association Award for its contribution for improving logger's safety. He is also a member of the SHARP Alliance Board and serves as their 2 nd Chair and Delegate for Region 3, is a member of the Community Ergonomic Resource Team (CERT), co-founder of the Safety Resource Team and for the last 8 years has represented the Cascade Chapter as the SkillsUSA Official Judge in safety & health for the State of Oregon championship finals.

Safety must garner the same level of expectations as production and quality because "Asking the company to overlook a simple safety violation would be asking the company to compromise its entire attitude toward the value of your life", author unknown. If you are ask to be leaders in safety please remember safety is a team effort and as President, Harry Truman once said; "It's amazing how much you can accomplish when you don't care who gets the credit".

Vice President - Elizabeth Bartleson

Elizabeth Bartleson is a contractor employed by EG&G Technical Services at the US DOE National Energy Technology Lab in Albany , Oregon . She works in the Environmental Health & Safety Group and is the chemical inventory and MSDS manager and hazardous waste coordinator.

Elizabeth has been working in the hazardous materials and hazardous waste management field since 1998. In previous positions, Elizabeth spent worked for a private spill response contractor as the company environmental scientist. She then founded a consulting and contracting business and spent four years assisting her clients with their hazardous materials management and disposal projects. Elizabeth received her undergratuate degree in Environmental Science at the University of Oregon.

Secretary - Twyla Gallaway

Twyla has worked for the Health and Safety Institute for the last five and a half years. During that time she has been the National Implementation Manager for AED products and services and most recently took a position as the Quality Assurance Manager. Twyla graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Oregon with minors in Biology and Psychology.

Governmental Affairs Chair - Mark Maguire

Mark Maguire is the Safety Coordinator for the Eugene Water and Electric Board, EWEB. Prior to joining EWEB, Mr. Maguire was an Occupational Safety Officer and Construction Project Manager at the University of Oregon for 16 years and a Nursery Superintendent at International Paper for 12 years.

Mark, a CSP since 2000, is currently working to develop an organization-wide safety manual at EWEB and creating an educational program focused on high voltage line exposures and safe approach distances for workers in the construction industry.

Mark enjoys water activities (warm beaches, fishing, boating), working on home improvement projects, and puttering in the garden.

Membership Chair - Steve Bridges

Steve Bridges is the Sales and Marketing Manager for SAFETYCAL, INC. a sign & decal manufacturer. Industrial safety signage is their specialty. Although, 80% of their products are custom made. Steve retired from The Register-Guard newspaper on August 11, 2000. He had been employed there for 30 years. He was a District Manager six years, County Manager for one year and Sales Manager for 23 years. In these positions he was responsible for maintaining and increasing the overall circulation for the newspaper.

Steve served as a United Way Loaned Executive for The Register-Guard during the fall campaign of 1984. Steve served on the United Way committee, the Concessions committee and the Safety Committee. Steve carriers an open water diver qualification certificate and maintains a current basic first aid and CPR card. Steve was president of the Emerald Track Club for four years.

Steve served in the U.S. Army where he became a Staff Sergeant E-6 in the Adjutant Generals Corp at the age of 20. He served in Vietnam and was presented with the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal and the Bronze Star Medal. During his stay in Vietnam he also served as a lifeguard at an Officers swimming pool in Dian. Steve was honorably discharged on May 17, 1970.

Steve has attended many trainings, conferences and seminars for computer programs, management, human relations, human potential, human effectiveness, time management and sales.

Steve is currently an associate member of the ASSE-Cascade chapter. Steve has run seven marathons, several half marathons and more 10K's than he can remember. Steve likes to spend time with his family, attends church, power walks, hikes, rides bike, lifts weights and likes to work and play on the computer.

Member at Large - Jim Johnson

Jim Johnson is a member-at-large of the ASSE Cascade Chapter for 2009. In 2002 he was named CEO of D2000 Safety, which provides advanced safety training in the areas of confined space, fall protection, excavation safety, and industrial rescue.

In addition to delivering classes and seminars, he is responsible for designing the company’s curricula and ensuring the continued quality of D2000 programs. Previous to his involvement with D2000, Jim worked with a wide number of Fortune 500 firms as a consultant and instructional designer developing management, sales, personal development, and technical training programs.

Newsletter Editor & Past President - Mary Lou Wilson

Since 1991, Mary Lou Wilson has served as Safety Coordinator for the Wildish companies - a family-owned sand and gravel and construction company with corporate offices in Eugene, Oregon. Her role includes the development of safety programs, conducting jobsite safety audits, and training field personnel.

She has been a member of ASSE since 1992, and has participated on the planning committee for several of the Cascade Chapter's safety conferences, as well as the chapter's executive committee.

Conference Co-Chair & Past President - Doug Caven

Prior to joining David W. Bogart Associates, Inc. in 2008, Mr. Caven was the Safety Coordinator for EWEB in Eugene, Oregon. His duties during his 28 years with EWEB included 14 years in safety and risk management. Mr. Caven also held positions in Risk Management, claims management and claims adjusting, and for the last 8 years as the manager of safety for the utility company. At EWEB, his duties included safety program development, hazard identification and control, development of the utilities emergency plans and coordination of emergency response throughout the utilities territory, safety training and program development, and management of the utilities construction activities.

In addition to his duties at EWEB, Mr. Caven served on the board of directors as vice president for the Oregon Utility Notification Center and the Lane County Utility Coordinating Council. In addition he has served on the Oregon Utility Safety Committee and worked with that committee on the revisions to the Overhead Lines Safety Act. Other professional activities include serving as a past president of the Cascade Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE).

Mr. Caven attended the University of Oregon. He is a National Safety Council Certified Utility Safety Administrator, holds a 30 hour OR-OSHA Safety and Health certificate, an OR-OSHA Certificate of Safety and Health Management and is a confined space trainer, certified by D2000. He is an avid rafter and is vice president of the McKenzie Guide Association.
